Support

Chalk is a small, offline app, so support is a conversation rather than a ticket queue. Tell us what you were doing and what happened, and include your Android version if the app misbehaved.

What we can and cannot recover

We cannot recover your records. Chalk has no server and no backup of your board — that is the whole design. If the app is uninstalled, the device is lost, or Clear all data is confirmed, the records are gone and there is nothing on our side to restore from.

So export regularly. Settings → Export → Full backup (JSON) writes a file and hands it to the share sheet; send it to yourself and keep it somewhere you trust. Settings → Import & restore puts it back.

Common questions

Why does Chalk refuse to let me pick someone?

Three reasons block a pick outright and the card tells you which: the person is already on an overlapping shift, they are no longer on the bench, or the order requires a ticket they do not hold or whose expiry has passed. Two more only warn — they do not normally work that weekday, or they are on hold — so you can still send them if you know something the app does not.

A night shift and the next morning are clashing. Is that right?

Yes. A shift whose end time is not after its start runs past midnight, so 22:00–06:00 on Monday finishes on Tuesday morning and genuinely overlaps a Tuesday 05:00 start. Chalk compares real instants rather than clock times, which is why it catches a clash a paper diary shows as two separate days.

Two shifts touch at 14:00 — why is that allowed?

Because it is a handover, not a clash. Chalk treats shift windows as half-open: one finishing exactly when the next begins is fine. Any actual overlap, even by a minute, is refused.

Why is my turn-up rate showing a dash?

Nothing has been closed for that person yet. A new worker shows “New” rather than 0%, because an empty record is not a bad record. Run a day close and the figure appears.

My streak did not break even though today is half empty.

Deliberate. Today is not over, so a board you are still filling does not count against you. The streak resumes from yesterday and picks today up as soon as every socket is filled.

I changed a worker’s pay rate and old shifts did not change.

Also deliberate. The pay and bill rates are copied onto each assignment at the moment it is made, so past weeks keep the numbers you actually agreed and a rate change never rewrites history or a timesheet you have already sent.

Can I bill in my own currency?

Yes. Settings → Currency offers a picker and every amount in the app follows it. Amounts are stored as plain numbers, so switching the currency changes how they are shown and never rewrites what you entered.

Does Chalk need a connection?

Only to show this website’s privacy policy page inside the app. Every other feature — the board, the bench, the checks, day close, the charts, export — works with the phone in airplane mode.

Can I move my data to a new phone?

Export a full JSON backup on the old device, send it to yourself, and use Settings → Restore from a backup on the new one. Restore replaces everything currently in the app, so export first if the new device already has records worth keeping.
