What we can and cannot recover
We cannot recover your records. Tumbler has no server and holds no copy of your book — that is the whole design, and for a keying chart it is the point. If the app is uninstalled, the device is lost, or Clear all data is confirmed, the records are gone and there is nothing on our side to restore from.
So back up regularly. Settings → Export & backup → Full backup (JSON) writes a file into the app’s own folder and lists it there; send a copy to yourself and keep it somewhere you trust. The same screen restores from any backup on the device, or from one you paste back in.
Common questions
How do I enter a bitting?
As 3-5-2-7-4 or just 35274 — both parse the same way. The system’s depth-and-space profile decides how many cuts there should be, the shallowest and deepest legal depth, and the largest step allowed between neighbouring cuts.
Why was my bitting refused?
One of three reasons, and the field says which: the wrong number of cuts for that system, a depth outside the profile’s range, or a step between two neighbouring cuts over the MACS. That last one is the cut that snaps a blade or will not machine, which is why it is refused here rather than at the code cutter.
Where does the pin chart come from?
From the bittings of every symbol that has to operate that cylinder. The shallowest cut at each chamber becomes the bottom pin, each step up to the next distinct depth becomes a master wafer, and the driver makes up the rest of the stack. Nothing is stored — it is recomputed each time you open the door, so it cannot drift away from the bittings it came from.
A chamber shows no wafer. Is that wrong?
No. A chamber only needs a wafer where the operating keys are cut to different depths. Where the master and the change key share a depth, one pin serves both and the chamber is not mastered at all.
How do I record a door that two branches open?
Add the extra symbol as cross-keyed on the door record. A shared plant room on two buildings’ masters is the usual case. It then appears in the pin chart, in “what opens this door”, and in the impact estimate for both branches.
Why does a lost change key invalidate the grand master?
Because containing the loss means re-pinning the cylinders that key opened — and every other key that operated those cylinders stops working the moment they change, including the masters above. Those keys have to be re-cut too. It is the number people leave out, and it is why the estimate is bigger than expected.
What does “apply the work order” actually change?
Each change symbol on a compromised door gets a fresh bitting that clears the spec and is not already in use anywhere in the book, and a re-pin record is written against each of those doors. It can be undone from the snackbar. It changes records only — the cylinders themselves are still your job.
Where is a key’s status stored?
Nowhere. Whether a key is on the board, issued, overdue or lost is worked out from its custody events every time. Undo an event and the state goes back exactly where it was, because there is no second copy of the truth to fall out of step.
How do deposits work?
A deposit entered when a key is issued is held against that key, and refunded automatically when the key is returned. The hub shows the total float you are holding. Amounts are in whichever currency you picked in Settings; the app performs no conversion.
My manufacturer is not in the list.
Settings → Custom profile lets you set the chamber count, the depth range and the MACS yourself. Nothing in the engine hard-codes those numbers, so a system cut on a manufacturer we have never heard of works exactly as well as one that ships.
Why is there no file picker for restore?
The share sheet and the file picker cannot both be installed in this app without a dependency conflict, and sharing an export is the more useful of the two. Restore therefore reads the backups Tumbler itself wrote, or JSON you paste in.
Does it work with no signal?
Entirely. The only network request Tumbler ever makes is loading the privacy policy page when you open it from Settings. Riser closets and basements were the point.
