What we can and cannot recover
We cannot recover your records. Dowel has no server and no backup of your farm — that is the whole design. If the app is uninstalled, the device is lost, or Clear all data is confirmed, the records are gone and there is nothing on our side to restore from.
So export regularly. Settings → Export → Full backup (JSON) writes a file and hands it to the share sheet; send it to yourself and keep it somewhere you trust. Settings → Import & restore puts it back.
Common questions
Why is my biological efficiency over 100%?
That is normal and correct. BE compares fresh yield against dry substrate weight, and mushrooms are mostly water, so a good oyster run on a supplemented mix commonly lands between 75% and 125%. If yours is far outside that, check the dry weight per block on the recipe first — it is the number BE divides by.
Why does a written-off block not lower my BE?
Because it never had a chance to fruit. Dowel divides by the blocks still live, so a contaminated lot is judged on the blocks that actually ran. The loss is counted separately, as the contamination rate — one number for the mix, one for the process.
Where did my forecast dates come from?
The species defaults, until you have run a couple of lots. After that Dowel uses the median it has actually observed on your farm and says so on the chip. Dowel never sends a notification; the dates live in the Next up list on the board.
Can I weigh in pounds and price in my own currency?
Yes. Settings → Units & money switches between kilograms and pounds, Celsius and Fahrenheit, and offers a currency picker. Weights are stored in kilograms internally and converted on display, so switching units never rewrites your history.
Does Dowel need a connection?
Only to show this website's privacy policy page inside the app. Every other feature — recording, searching, the charts, export — works with the phone in airplane mode.
Can I move my data to a new phone?
Export a full JSON backup on the old device, send it to yourself, and use Settings → Import & restore on the new one. Import replaces everything currently in the app, so export first if the new device already has records worth keeping.
